Many students and parents ask about taking pictures of the show or making videos to share with family members who are out of town or just as a keepsake.
Video recording of our performances is never allowed. It is against the copyright of almost every play and musical. Many people believe that schools have the right to make an educational copy of shows. This is not true. If you have questions about this policy, we suggest your contact the company that publishes the play/musical. We are required to announce this restriction at our productions as well as note it in the program. Modern technology makes recording performances very easy. However, we ask that you refrain from filming the productions as this puts Olathe South in violation of our contract with the publishing companies. If you see a camera at the back of the theatre for our musicals, it is KC Starlight Theatre. They have negotiated permission to record the shows to use at the Starlight Theatre's Blue Star Awards.
A few royalty companies are beginning to grant video rights. This may become more common. When Olathe South is given permission to make/distribute video copies of a production, we will post an announcement on this page.
The other reason not to record a production is that the screen from your camera will often light up. This is distracting to the audience members behind you.
