"The ghost-with-the-most comes to the stage in this edgy and irreverent musical comedy based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film. Beetlejuice tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, her new house is haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium, and the biggest sandworm Broadway has ever seen."

Olathe South High School will be hosting a pilot production of Beetlejuice High School Version in the summer of 2026.

This is based on the full Broadway script from April 2019 with approved changes for pilot productions.

The condition of producing this show is that it will be adjudicated to perform at the International Thespian Festival in the summer of June 2027 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Olathe South High School and Mr. David Tate Hastings are sharing this opportunity with students in the Olathe Public Schools who want a chance to compete for a spot to perform on main stage at the first International Thespian Festival in Louisville, Kentucky in June of 2027.

Rehearsals and performances will only take place during the summer(s), when school is not in session.  The one exception will be for callbacks (by invitation only) in late February of 2026.

This show will be produced and directed by Mr. David Tate Hastings, Olathe South theatre educator. Mr. Hastings plans to select 21 students for the cast and 19 students for the crew. If all things are equal, this production could have 8 students in the cast/crew from each high school in the Olathe school district. Any 8th grader who is cast will come from the share of students from the high school they plan to attend in 26-27.

Mr. Hastings plans to have an orchestra pit of at least 17 students from Olathe public schools. Any Olathe student interested in playing in the orchestra should complete the application requirements outlined below. They will be contacted by Dr. Filla, Olathe South band teacher, who will be the conductor for Beetlejuice.

These are the dates for rehearsals and performances (Dr. Filla will determine the orchestra rehearsal schedule within these dates/times:)
  • Rehearsals: June 9-13 from 8:30-4:30 (lunch break on your own from 11:30-12:30)
  • Rehearsals: June 16-20 from 8:30-4:30 (lunch break on your own from 11:30-12:30)
  • Rehearsals: June 30-July 3rd from 8:30-4:30 (lunch break on your own from 11:30-12:30)
  • Rehearsals: July 7-9 from 8:30-4:30 (lunch break on your own from 11:30-12:30)
  • Performances: July 10-12 at 7pm
  • Brush up rehearsal: July 16 from 8:30-4:30 (lunch break on your own from 11:30-12:30)
  • Performances: July 17-19 at 7pm

This production will be advertised in as an Olathe School District musical. We will include all Thespian troupe numbers (including the middle school troupe number of any student we cast.)

The show will NOT be adjudicated for the Kansas Thespian Festival. The goal is that all parts of this show, with the exception of auditions, will be produced during the summer(s).

This pilot production of Beetlejuice High School Version is simply an extra educational opportunity for some of our stronger students in the Olathe Public Schools during the summer of 2026, and possibly 2027.

Funding this musical is done entirely through ticket sales. Every student involved with this production is required to purchase 40 tickets. These tickets are $15 a piece. This is a total of $600 per student. This provides each student the opportunity to sell all of their tickets and participate for free. All seats are general admission. The $600 is due two weeks after a student is offered a role in the show. Any student who does not pay for their tickets by that time will be replaced in the musical. Tickets at the door will cost $20. There will be no online ticket sales for this show. Presale tickets at the discounted rate are only available through the cast and crew. There are no refunds for ticket sales, however unsold tickets can be returned to the box office the night of the show. We will provide equal refunds to each student for the tickets we are able to sell at the $20 rate. In theory, a family could keep 10 tickets, and if the box office could sell all the tickets returned, a family that returned 30 tickets could have their 10 tickets for free and get all their money back (minus sales tax).

Make up kits are required for all cast members. You may purchase them from A to Z Theatrical or Kansas City Costume. Students may not share make up for health reasons.  If you have one from a previous show, you may use it. Students will receive instructions on how to apply stage makeup during rehearsal.

Students are REQUIRED to provide their own APPROPRIATE SHOES AS SPECIFIED BY THE CHOREOGRAPHER or COSTUMER. This is typically for character, jazz, ballet, or tap shoes, depending on the needs of the show.

Students will have the OPTION of purchasing items related to the show, such as a cast t-shirt. These items are optional.

Students are welcome to email Mr. Hastings directly with questions. Please include a parent or guardian on all emails. Students can arrange to check out scripts in December.

There are many amazing educational opportunities for students during the summer. We would love for you to submit an audition video and application if this opportunity is right for you.
