"The ghost-with-the-most comes to the stage in this edgy and irreverent musical comedy based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film. Beetlejuice tells the story of Lydia Deetz, a strange and unusual teenager obsessed with the whole “being dead thing.” Lucky for Lydia, her new house is haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium, and the biggest sandworm Broadway has ever seen."
Olathe South High School will be hosting a pilot production of Beetlejuice High School Version in the summer of 2026. Auditions will be in January of 2026.
This is based on the full Broadway script from April 2019 with approved changes for pilot productions.
The condition of producing this show is that it will be adjudicated to perform at the International Thespian Festival in the summer of June 2027 in Louisville, Kentucky.
Olathe South High School and Mr. David Tate Hastings are sharing this opportunity with students in the Olathe Public Schools who want a chance to compete for a spot to perform on main stage at the first International Thespian Festival in Louisville, Kentucky in June of 2027.
No part of this show will happen during the next two school years except for auditions in January of 2026. These auditions will not conflict with any theatrical events at an Olathe Public School.
This show will be produced and directed by Mr. David Tate Hastings, Olathe South theatre educator. Mr. Hastings plans to select 21 students for the cast and 19 students for the crew. If all things are equal, this production could have 8 students in the cast/crew from each high school in the Olathe school district. Any 8th grader who is cast will come from the share of students from the high school they plan to attend in 26-27.
Mr. Hastings plans to have an orchestra pit of at least 17 students from Olathe public schools. Any Olathe student interested in playing in the orchestra can contact Dr. Filla, Olathe South band teacher. He will be the conductor..
While we haven't officially picked the dates for rehearsals, we are looking at the following days:
This production will be advertised in all ways as an Olathe School District musical. We will include all Thespian troupe numbers (including the middle school troupe number of any student we cast.)
The show will NOT be adjudicated for the Kansas Thespian Festival. The goal is that all parts of this show, with the exception of auditions, will be produced during the summer(s).
This pilot production of Beetlejuice High School Version is simply an extra educational opportunity for some of our stronger students in the Olathe Public Schools during the summer of 2026, and possibly 2027.
Students are also welcome to email Mr. Hastings directly with questions. Please include a parent or guardian on all emails. Students can arrange to check out scripts in November and December.
There are many amazing educational opportunities for students during the summer. We would love to see you at auditions if this opportunity is right for you.
